Plant protection departament including entomology and fitopotology subjects was founded in 1929, later functioned under the name of "Entomology and Phytopathology", the first head of the department was Professor F.Y. Schembel. After 1937 the department functioned under different names ("Entomology and Phytopathology", "Sericulture", "Entomology", " Phytopathology "). In diferent times the departament was headed by professors A. Anuchin, B. Miksin, Z. Afendiev, A. Lobik, associate professor L. Kara –Murza, M. Bondarovich, M. Kosobutsky, R. Huseynov, D. Aslanov, S. Mamedova, Y. Rahimov, associate professor G. Mamedov, professor B. Khalilov, associate professor H. Jamalov.
Currently, the department is headed by Associate Professor Yagub Jafarov
Professor of the department, corresponding member of ANAS Ibrahim Jafarov wrote textbooks and teaching aids for bachelors, masters, dissertation candidates, doctoral students, teachers and specialists in the field of agronomy, agrochemistry and plant protection. Dozens of his scientific articles have been published in prestigious international journal.
At the department: The influence of global climate change on the harmful entomofauna of the potato agrocenosis; Improvement of the system of measures to combat the main pests of tomato plants in the Ganja-Gazakh region; Organization of combating pests common in the mycobiota of cucumbers in greenhouse conditions;
Scientific research is being carried out in Azerbaijan to study fungal diseases and ways to combat them on persimmon (Diospyros kaki) .
The department joins a number of international projects in the field of plant protection and cooperates with specialized departments of universities in the USA, Turkey, Germany, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Moldova.
Professor of the department Ibrahim Jafarov visited scientific universities of foreign countries and was elected "Honorary Doctor" of several universities.
At the jubilee meeting dedicating to the 15th anniversary of the Council of Rectors of the leading CIS universities, Ibrahim Jafarov for special merits and individual contribution to improving the Council, developing higher and doctoral education, expanding integration into international scientific activities, strengthening of friendship and cooperation, was awarded the gold medal "For contribution to the development of education and productivity."
In order to assist production, employees of the department regularly visit farms in the regions, organize seminars for farmers on the cultivation of various crops, disease and pest control measures, advise and conduct regular trainings.
There are 15 people (1 corresponding member of ANAS, professor, 5 associate professors, 4 senior lecturers, 5 assistants) in the department.
