Department of Soil Science

This department was one of the first departments established in 1920 under the name of Soil Science at the Baku Polytechnic Institute. Later, on the basis of this department was established a separate department of agrochemistry. The department was headed by Professor D.Ivanov until 1940. In 1940, the department of agrochemistry was merged with the department of soil science, and from 1959 it functioned as a separate department again. Due to structural changes, the department has recently been functioning under the name of Soil Science and Agrochemistry. The first head of the Department of Soil Science was Professor V.P Smirnov-Loginov. In the following periods, professors V.Akimtsev, M.Asgarbeyli, G.Kolotov, associate professor A.Shafibeyov, professor B.Agayev, associate professor M.Agamirov, academician M.Jafarov, associate professors O.Hajiyev, Professor A.Babayev, Associate Professor A.Zeynalova. Department of Soil Science

The department is actively involved in the training of soil specialists at the bachelor's, master's and doctoral levels.

Scientists of the department are working to increase soil fertility in the new farming conditions in the country, intensify crop production, ways to produce environmentally organic products, rules of efficient use of fertilizers, improve saline soils in the Kur-Araz lowlands by taken land reclamation measures and other problems later trying to apply them to farms.

Trainings are carried out at the base of the University, Azerbaijan Scientific-Research Institute of Plant Protection and Institute of Technical Plants, the city central park and exemplary farms.

Employees of the department are closely involved in the public life of the Republic, especially in the implementation of land reforms and assisting farmers.
Through their efforts, some problems of phosphorus and potassium in Azerbaijani agriculture have been solved, a scheme of fertilization of fodder crops, meadows and pastures has been developed, a number of successful works have been done in the field of soil physical properties, modeling and forecasting fertility.

In the last 5 years, the department has prepared 2 textbooks, 2 teaching aids, program, methodical instructions and test tasks.

Scientists of the department are closely working on the creation of a new legal framework for land relations in Azerbaijan, leading the work carried out at the University in the direction of organization and improvement of teaching, educational and methodological work.

The department conducts research on "Improvement of soil fertility assessment methodology in various agro-ecosystems, the impact of soil ecological, bioenergetic, hydrological and meteorological functions on fertility indicators and solutions of ecological problems."

The department collaborates with the Yaroslavl State Agricultural Academy ( Russia ) in the field of education and science.

Employees of the department periodically visit the farm "AMIN" in Garayeri settlement of Samukh region, study the soil under various plants, determine the norms and doses of fertilizers.

There are 15 people (4 associate professors, 7 senior teachers, 4 assistants) at the department.

The laboratory of Soil Science

The soil science laboratory has been operating since January 2008 and is equipped with modern equipment. Samples are taken here and prepared for analysis.

The teaching staff, technical staff, master's and bachelor's students of the department participate in the exchange programs. They experience in the laboratory of the University of Igdir, Turkey which is equipped with new equipment.

The laboratory is headed by Doctor of Philosophy in Agrarian Sciences , Vafa Verdiyeva.

In the laboratory are carried out and set soil, plant and water analyzes , soil pH, salinity, carbonate, humus, nitrogen, phosphorus, macro and micro elements and other indicators.
